K12 ratings are obsolete. The Department of State K-rating system (K4, K8, K12) was officially retired in 2009 and replaced by ASTM F2656 standards (M30, M40, M50). Federal agencies and contractors require ASTM certifications for all new installations.
K12 and M50 have similar performance criteria; both test 15,000 lb vehicles at 50 mph with ≤3.3 ft penetration. But they are not identical standards. ASTM F2656 uses different testing protocols, documentation requirements, and vehicle classes than the legacy DoS system.
